Identity determines whether the analyzed compound corresponds to the expected peptide or molecular structure. Purity describes the proportion of detected material attributable to the target compound relative to detectable impurities.

These are separate analytical characteristics. Confirmation of identity establishes that the expected compound is present, while purity analysis evaluates the relative presence of the target peptide compared with other detectable components.

A purity result of ≥99% generally indicates that at least 99% of the material detected by the specified analytical method corresponds to the target peptide relative to other detectable peaks or components.

Analytical purity should always be interpreted in the context of the testing method used. High chromatographic purity does not independently establish sterility, endotoxin levels, biological activity, absolute peptide content, stability, or suitability for human or veterinary use.

A batch-specific Certificate of Analysis provides analytical documentation associated with the particular production lot supplied to the researcher.

Researchers should match the batch or lot number on their material with the corresponding COA and retain that documentation as part of their experimental records. This improves material traceability and helps support reproducibility when experiments are performed across different dates, laboratories, or production lots.

The impurity profile of a synthetic peptide depends on its amino acid sequence, synthesis method, purification process, handling, and storage conditions.

Potential impurities may include truncated or deletion sequences, incomplete reaction products, oxidation products, deamidated species, synthesis-related byproducts, residual counterions, solvents, or degradation products.

Different analytical techniques detect different types of impurities, which is why the analytical methods reported on a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis are important when evaluating research materials.

Peptide stability can vary substantially according to amino acid sequence, molecular structure, chemical modifications, temperature, moisture, oxygen exposure, light exposure, pH, and other environmental conditions.

Certain peptides may also be more susceptible to processes such as oxidation, hydrolysis, aggregation, or deamidation.

Researchers should follow product-specific storage information, minimize unnecessary environmental exposure, document storage conditions, and incorporate appropriate stability controls when required by the experimental design.

Chemical purity, sterility, and endotoxin testing are separate analytical specifications and should not be treated as interchangeable.

A high peptide purity result does not establish that a material is sterile or that it meets a particular endotoxin specification. Researchers should rely only on testing and specifications specifically documented for the individual product and batch.

Unless sterility or endotoxin testing is expressly identified in the applicable product documentation or Certificate of Analysis, it should not be assumed.
